BARRIE, Ont. — Andrew Mangiapane scored twice in the first period and the Barrie Colts went on to defeat the visiting North Bay Battalion 5-2 on Thursday to open up their Ontario Hockey League second-round playoff series.
Josh Carrick also had a pair of goals for the Colts while Mangiapane also picked up an assist on Justin Scott’s empty netter.
Regular-season leading scorer Kevin Labanc tacked on three assists and is tied with Kingston’s Michael Dal Colle for the OHL playoff scoring lead with 15 points in eight games.
Steve Harland and Kyle Wood scored for the Battalion and Brett McKenzie picked up an assist on both goals.
Barrie’s Mackenzie Blackwood made 32 saves for the win as James Smith kicked out 25-of-29 shots for North Bay.
The Colts went 1 for 2 on the power play while the Battalion scored once on three chances with the man advantage.
Barrie hosts Game 2 on Monday.

KINGSTON, Ont. — Alex Nedeljkovic made 31 saves and Vince Dunn had a goal and an assist as Niagara beat the Frontenacs in Game 1 of its best-of-seven first-round matchup.
Anthony DiFruscia’s second-period goal stood up as the winner for the IceDogs while Aaron Haydon added an empty netter late in the third.
Lawson Crouse scored for Kingston, which got a 29-save outing from Jeremy Helvig.
Game 2 goes Friday in Kingston.
