OHL: Whalers eliminate Sting from playoffs

Vincent Trocheck scored twice and set up two more as the Plymouth Whalers eliminated the Sarnia Sting from Ontario Hockey League playoff action with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old forward scored five goals and added seven assists in the four-game first-round sweep for Plymouth and currently leads the OHL post-season in scoring.

Mitchell Heard had two goals and an assist for the Whalers while Tom Wilson and Connor Carrick each chipped in with two assists.

Wilson finished the series second in team scoring with two goals and eight points.

Bryan Moore and Nickolas Latta scored for the Sting, who were outscored 24-8 in the series, and Charles Sarault and Reid Boucher had two assists apiece.

Boucher, who led the OHL in the regular season with 62 goals, scored twice in the series to go along with three assists.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 22 saves for the win as JP Anderson turned away 43-of-48 shots in defeat.

Plymouth went 2 for 2 on the power play while Sarnia scored once on five chances with the man advantage.

The Whalers have met the Sting four times in first-round action since 1998 and eliminated them every time, sweeping two series and winning 16-of-18 games along the way.

Plymouth is the first team in the Western Conference to qualify for second-round action and will have to wait for each of the other three series to finish before knowing who it will face.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Barrie 8, Kingston 2 and Sault Ste. Marie 1, Owen Sound 0 (OT).

At Sarnia, Ont., Moore opened the scoring for the Sting only 21 seconds into the first period, however Meurs and Trocheck responded 52 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead.

With only 21 seconds left in the first, Latta scored on the power play to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes of play.

Plymouth outshot Sarnia 17-5 in the second period and took a 3-2 advantage into the third period after Heard scored at 19:57 while on the power play.

Trocheck made it 4-2 early in the third period and Heard put the game out of reach with a power-play goal at 12:59.

At Kingston, Ont., Mitchell Theoret scored twice and set up two more and Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists as Barrie downed the Frontenacs to sweep their first-round matchup.

Greyhounds 1 Attack 0 (OT)

At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Ryan Sproul scored at 19:12 of overtime and Matt Murray stopped all 36 shots he faced as the Greyhounds evened their first-round series at two games apiece with Owen Sound.
