QMJHL Playoffs: Screaming Eagles earn Game 1 victory

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Michael Joly scored three times as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles beat the host Saint John Sea Dogs 4-1 on Thursday in Game 1 of their Quebec Major Junior Hockey League second-round playoff matchup.

Joly’s first goal came at 8:15 of the second period to make it 2-0 for No. 7 Cape Breton. With his team ahead 2-1 in the third, Joly struck two more times on the power play to put the game out of reach.

Pierre-Luc Dubois opened the scoring with a power-play goal for the Screaming Eagles, who got a 25-save outing from Alexandre Belanger.

Samuel Dove-McFalls put the third-seeded Sea Dogs on the board in the second. Marc-Antoine Turcotte stopped 29-of-33 shots in a losing cause.

Cape Breton went 3 for 6 on the power play while Saint John failed to score on five chances with the man advantage.

The Sea Dogs host Game 2 of the best-of-seven set on Saturday.

CATARACTES 5, ISLANDERS 3

SHAWINIGAN, Que. — Brandon Gignac had two goals and an assist as the Cataractes took Game 1 of their second-round series against Charlottetown.

Danny Moynihan, Alexis D’Aoust and Gabriel Gagne also found the back of the net for second-seeded Shawinigan. Philippe Cadorette made 29 saves for the win.

Mitchell Balmas, Keith Getson and Bradley Kennedy supplied the offence for the No. 9 Islanders. Starter Mason McDonald allowed five goals on 26 shots and found himself on the bench to start the third period. Matthew Welsh stopped all 10 shots he face din relief.

Game 2 goes Friday in Shawinigan.
