QMJHL Playoffs: Cataractes top Islanders to take 3-2 series lead

CHARLOTTETOWN — Gabriel Gagne had a pair of goals– including the winner — as the Shawinigan Cataractes topped the Charlottetown Islanders 6-4 on Thursday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff action.

Mathieu Olivier scored on a penalty shot to open scoring for the Cataractes, who have a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven quarter-final series. Samuel Blier, Alexis D’Aoust and Dmytro Timashov rounded out the attack for Shawinigan, while Philippe Cadorette made 31 saves for the win.

Alexis Vanier had a goal and two assists for Charlottetown, while Kameron Kielly, Oliver Cooper and Filip Rydstrom also found the back of the net. Goaltender Mason McDonald stopped 19-of-24 shots for the Islanders.

The Cataractes were 1 for 2 on the power play and Charlottetown was 1 for 7 with the man advantage.
