QMJHL roundup: Garland leads Wildcats to win

CHARLOTTETOWN — Conor Garland had a goal and an assist in regulation and another goal in the shootout as the Moncton Wildcats edged the host Charlottetown Islanders 4-3 on Wednesday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The 19-year-old Garland, who has only been held off the scoresheet once this season, has 24 goals and 85 points in 35 games to lead the QMJHL in scoring.

Will Smith and Cameron Askew scored in regulation for the Wildcats (26-10-4), who extended their win streak to six games. Kelly Klima and Askew added a goal each in the shootout.

Daniel Sprong, Oliver Cooper and Filip Rydstrom found the back of the net for the Islanders (14-19-4).

Moncton’s Blade Mann-Dixon only had to make 15 saves for the win as Matthew Welsh kicked out 47-of-50 shots for Charlottetown.

The Wildcats went 0 for 4 on the power play while the Islanders failed to score on five chances with the man advantage.

CHICOUTIMI, Que. — Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau had a hat trick and Xavier Potvin made 26 saves as the Sagueneens beat Victoriaville for their third straight win.

Nicolas Roy and Antoine Marcoux also scored for Chicoutimi (17-16-4) and Jake Smith tacked on two assists.

The Tigres (16-14-6) got goals from Maxime Comtois and Vincent Lanoue. Olivier Tremblay stopped 18 shots in a losing cause.

ROUYN-NORANDA, Que. — Martins Dzierkals had three goals and an assist Samuel Harvey made 14 saves as the first-place Huskies blanked Blainville-Boisbriand.

Philippe Meyers, Julien Nantel and Mathieu Boucher each had a goal and a helper for Rouyn-Noranda (28-5-4).

Mark Grametbauer stopped 12-of-16 shots for the Armada (13-19-6), who are on a three-game slide.

SHERBROOKE, Que. — Alexandre Lagace made 26 saves and Guillaume Gauthier scored twice as the Phoenix shut out Gatineau.

Julien Bahl and Nicolas Poulin had a goal apiece for Sherbrooke (14-17-5) and Carl Neill chipped in with two assists.

Mathieu Bellemare turned aside 26-of-30 shots for the Olympiques (23-10-2).

VAL-D’OR, Que. — Dereck Baribeau made 24 saves and Anthony Richard had a goal and an assist as the Foreurs toppled Drummondville.

Francois Beauchemin, Mathieu Nadaeu, Nathan Tremblay and Nicolas Aube-Kubel also scored for Val-d’Or (27-8-3).

Alex Barre-Boulet and Mathieu Sevigny responded for the Voltigeurs (18-20-0). Nicolas Lachance turned away 32-of-37 shots in defeat.
