QMJHL Roundup: Groulx nets first 2 goals as Mooseheads top Sea Dogs

HALIFAX — Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored his first two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League goals on Saturday night as the Halifax Mooseheads got past the Saint John Sea Dogs 4-3.

Groulx, the first-overall pick at this year’s QMJHL draft, chipped in on the power play in the first and then beat Alex Bishop in the third for the winner. Cooper Jones and Arnaud Durandeau also had goals for the Mooseheads (1-1-0).

John Warren, Gabriel Bettez and Matthew Highmore all had power-play goals for Saint John (0-2-0), with Bishop turning aside 23-of-27 shots in 58:04.

Kevin Resop picked up the win in net by making 33 saves.

Halifax converted once on seven power plays while the Sea Dogs were 3 for 9 with the man advantage.

SHAWINIGAN, Que. — Cavan Fitzgerald scored the winner late in the third period as the Cataractes rallied past Chicoutimi.

Samuel Asselin and Justin Bernier also scored in the third for Shawnigan (1-1-0), with Zachary Bouthillier turning aside 14-of-16 shots in net.

Keenan MacIsaac and Julien Tessier found the back of the net for the Sagueneens (0-2-0) while Xavier Potvin made 39 saves.

BAIE-COMEAU, Que. — Hunter Moreau and Denis Mikhnin had goals in the shootout as Rimouski slipped past the Drakkar.

Carson MacKinnon scored nine seconds into the third period for the Oceanic (2-0-0). Gabriel Morency stopped 20-of-21 shots through regulation and overtime.

Justin Doucet opened the scoring in the second for Baie-Comeau (0-1-1), with Bo Taylor making 22 saves in net.

TITAN 3 SCREAMING EAGLES 1

SYDNEY, N.S. — Dawson Theede scored twice and added an assist as Acadie-Bathurst downed the Screaming Eagles.

Jonathan Bourcier opened the scoring in the second for the Titan (2-0-0), who got 19 saves from Reilly Pickard.

Jordan Ty Fournier cut into Cape Breton’s (0-2-0) deficit later in the second with his first of the season. Kevin Mandolese kicked out 18-of-21 shots in defeat.

FOREURS 5 PHOENIX 4

VAL-D’OR, Que. — Ivan Kozlov struck twice and Olivier Galipeau had three assists to lead the Foreurs past Sherbrooke.

Kozlov, Alexis Pepin and Simon Lafrance supplied the offence in the third for Val-d’Or (2-0-0), which rallied from a 3-0 deficit. Alexandre Couture had the other while Dereck Baribeau made 27 saves in net.

Anderson MacDonald scored twice for the Phoenix (1-1-0), with Jack Kilgour and Nicolas Roy rounding out the attack. Justin Blanchette turned away 24-of-29 shots in the loss.
