OTTAWA — Mitchell Balmas scored a hat trick as the Gatineau Olympiques downed the Ottawa 67’s 4-1 on Sunday in an outdoor interleague matchup at TD Place.
Gatineau, of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Ottawa, of the Ontario Hockey League, were meeting in the regular season for the first time in 14 years. It was also the first OHL outdoor game played in Canada and third in league history.
The game, which reached temperatures of -19 C with the wind chill, was played a day after the Ottawa Senators beat the Montreal Canadiens at TD Place as part of the NHL’s 100th anniversary festivities.
Shawn Boudrias had the other goal for the Olympiques (20-10-4), who won their eighth straight game. Tristan Berube made 28 saves for the win in net.
Kody Clark had a power-play goal for Ottawa (15-16-3), which is celebrating its 50th season. Olivier Tremblay turned away 15 shots in defeat.
Gatineau was scoreless on two power plays and the 67’s were 1 for 4.
