QMJHL Roundup: Thompson lifts Islanders to win

CHARLOTTETOWN — Will Thompson scored in overtime to lift the Charlottetown Islanders over the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-4 on Thursday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Thompson’s goal ended a three-goal rally by Saint John.

Samuel Blais had back-to-back goals for Charlottetown (18-21-7) in the first period, while Filip Chlapik and Bradley Kennedy also scored as the Islanders built a 4-1 lead by the 13:28 mark of the second period.

Matthew Highmore struck twice and Sam Povorozniouk also scored as the Sea Dogs (27-13-4) reeled off three straight goals to force overtime and set up Thompson’s heroics. Nathan Noel had a power-play goal in the first for Saint John.

Goaltender Mason McDonald made 45 saves to earn the win.

Marc-Antoine Turcotte started in net for the Sea Dogs, stopping 4-of-7 shots in 13:33 of work before being replaced by Alex Bishop, who turned aside 16-of-18 shots.

The Islanders went 2 for 6 on the power play, while Saint John was 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

QUEBEC CITY — Danny Moynihan had the eventual winner and added an assist to lift Shawinigan over the Remparts.

Cavan Fitzgerald opened the scoring for the Cataractes (29-12-3), while Gabriel Gagne added an empty-net goal.

Ross MacDougall broke the shutout for Quebec (23-18-4) with eight seconds left to play.

HUSKIES 8 MOOSEHEADS 4

ROUYN-NORANDA, Que. — Timo Meier had a hat trick and added two assists as the Huskies topped Halifax.

Jean-Christophe Beaudin, Allan Caron, Francis Perron, Gabriel Fontaine and Philippe Myers rounded out the attack for Rouyn-Noranda (34-8-4).

Anthony Sorrentino and Maxime Fortier had two goals apiece for the Mooseheads (15-26-6).
