QMJHL: Sprong, Cobbold lead Islanders to win

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Talk about a big second period.

Daniel Sprong and Spenser Cobbold each had a pair of goals as the Charlottetown Islanders produced all of their offence in the second period and beat the Sherbrooke Phoenix 8-2 in Game 1 on Friday night in their Quebec Major Junior Hockey League first-round playoff series.

Oliver Cooper and Filip Rydstrom added a goal and two assists apiece for the Islanders. Luc Deschenes and Mitchell Balmas rounded out the attack. Ross Johnston had three helpers.

Carl Neill and Tim Wieser both had a goal and assist for Sherbrooke.

Mason McDonald got the win in net, stopping 30 shots. Alex Bureau started for the Phoenix and turned aside 12-of-17 shots in 32:37. Evan Fitzpatrick went the rest of the way making nine saves.

Charlottetown scored once on three power plays while Sherbrooke went 1 for 6.

Game 2 goes Saturday in Sherbrooke.

OLYMPIQUES 4 ARMADA 1

BOISBRIAND, Que. — Joey Richard had a goal and three assists as Gatineau downed the Armada in Game 1 of their first-round playoff matchup.

Alexandre Carrier, Valentin Zykov and Yakov Trenin supplied the rest of the offence for the Olympiques.

Danick Martel scored a power-play goal in the third period for Blainville-Boisbriand, which host Game 2 on Saturday.

SCREAMING EAGLES 3 REMPARTS 2

QUEBEC — Evgeny Svechnikov’s power-play goal in the second period stood as the winner as Cape Breton edged the Remparts in Game 1 of its first-round playoff series.

Matthew Nosella and Dillon Boucher added the others for the Screaming Eagles.

Adam Erne and Vladimir Tkachev scored for Quebec, which host Game 2 on Saturday.

OCEANIC 4 TIGRES 3 (OT)

RIMOUSKI, Que. — Francois Beauchemin scored 39 seconds into overtime as the Oceanic took Game 1 of their playoff series over Victoriaville.

Justin Samson, Anthony DeLuca and Alexis Loiseau rounded out the attack for Rimouski.

Angelo Miceli and Samuel Blais both chipped in with power-play goals for the Tigres. Gabriel Gagne added the other.

The Oceanic host Game 2 on Saturday.

FOREURS 6 HUSKIES 2

VAL-D’OR, Que. — Captain Pierre-Maxime Poudrier was one-of-four Foreurs to have a goal and an assist as they beat Rouyn-Noranda in Game 1 in its first-round matchup.

Anthony Richard, Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Nathan Tremblay had similar nights for Val-d’Or. Simon Tremblay and Olivier Galipeau added the others.

Justin Guenette and Ryan Penny scored for the Huskies.

Game 2 takes place in Val-d’Or on Saturday.

DRAKKAR 3 SEA DOGS 1

BAIE-COMEAU, Que. — Jasmin Boutet had a pair of goals as the Drakkar got past Saint John to take Game 1 of their playoff series.

Nicolas Meloche added the other for Baie-Comeau, which host Game 2 on Saturday.

Luke Green opened the scoring with a power-play goal for the Sea Dogs.

MOOSEHEADS 3 CATARACTES 2

SHAWINIGAN, Que. — Danny Moynihan scored the go-ahead goal on the power play in the third period as Halifax edged the Cataractes in Game 1 of first-round playoff action.

Ryan Falkenham also had a power-play goal for the Mooseheads, with Maxime Fortier opening the offence. Winnipeg Jets prospect Nikolaj Ehlers added three assists.

Brandon Gignac, with the man advantage, and Anthony Beauvillier found the back of the net for Shawinigan. It hosts Game 2 on Saturday.
