Sagueneens hand Voltigeurs fourth straight loss

MONCTON, N.B. — Will Smith scored twice and added three assists as the Moncton Wildcats exploded for four goals in the first and third periods to beat the Sherbrooke Phoenix 9-3 on Saturday night in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Taylor Burke also had a pair of goals for Moncton (34-15-3). Dominic Talbot-Tassi, Liam Murphy, Lane Cormier, Noah Zilbert and Bronson Beaton supplied the rest of the offence.

Montreal Canadiens prospect Daniel Audette scored a hat trick for the Phoenix (29-20-4), who have lost three in a row.

Alex Dubeau got the win in goal for the Wildcats, making 25 saves. Evan Fitzpatrick started for Sherbrooke and turned away 24-of-33 shots in 53 minutes. Alex Bureau finished out the game and made two stops.

Moncton converted on two-of-four power-play chances while the Phoenix were unsuccessful on their only chance.

ISLANDERS 4, FOREURS 3

VAL-D’OR, Que. — Oliver Cooper scored 5:28 into the third period on the power play as Charlottetown held on to beat the Foreurs.

Daniel Sprong opened the scoring for the Islanders (27-21-4) in the second before Alexandre Goulet and Kameron Kielly added power-play goals later in the period.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Pierre-Maxime Poudrier and Alexis Pepin all found the back of the net for Val-d’Or (22-22-8).

SAGUENEENS 5, VOLTIGEURS 2

CHICOUTIMI, Que. — Samuel Blier and Laurent Dauphin each had a pair of goals to lead the Sagueneens past Drummondville.

Alexandre Ranger started the scoring just 2:25 into the first period for Chicoutimi (22-23-5).

Christophe Lalancette and Alex Barre-Boulet responded for the Voltigeurs (23-26-3), who have dropped four straight.

OLYMPIQUES 2, TIGRES 1

GATINEAU, Que. — Jake Coughler scored the eventual winner in the second period as the Olympiques slipped past Victoriaville.

Louick Marcotte had a power-play goal for Gatineau (20-30-4).

Nikita Li replied in the third period for the Tigres (22-24-6).

SCREAMING EAGLES 4 OCEANIC 3 (SO)

SYDNEY, N.S. — Maxim Lazarev had the only goal in the shootout as the Screaming Eagles edged Rimouski.

Evgeny Svechnikov struck twice in regulation for Cape Breton (23-23-5) with Duncan MacIntyre adding the other 1:35 into the third period.

Christopher Clapperton had a three-point night for the Oceanic (34-13-4). Anthony DeLuca tied the game with under two minutes left in the third.

MOOSEHEADS 3, TITAN 0

HALIFAX — Timo Meier scored twice and Kevin Resop stopped all 20 shots he faced as the Mooseheads blanked Acadie-Bathurst.

Winnipeg Jets prospect Nikolaj Ehlers had a goal and two assists for Halifax (26-22-4).

Reilly Pickard turned away 25 shots in goal for the Titan (14-35-6).
