Switzerland has named eight CHL players to its preliminary roster for the World Junior Championship.

Led by Sherbrooke’s dynamic duo of Tim Wieser and Kay Schweri, Switzerland’s CHL contingent also includes defencemen Phil Baltisberger (Guelph), Michael Fora (Kamloops) and Yannick Rathgeb (Plymouth), along with forwards Timo Meier (Halifax) and Kris Schmidli (Kelowna).

Wieser leads the Phoenix in scoring with 27 goals and 40 points in 26 games, while Schweri is second with seven goals and 39 points in 27 games. They will be counted on to provide the bulk of the offence up front for Switzerland along with Nashville Predators first-rounder Kevin Fiala, who has put up good numbers in the Swedish Hockey League this season.

The final roster of 23 players will be named after Switzerland’s exhibition game against Team Canada in Montreal on Dec. 23.
