Saint John Sea Dogs make history at QMJHL Draft

The Saint John Sea Dogs made some QMJHL history with the first pick of the 2015 draft Saturday, selecting 15-year-old centre Joseph Veleno.

On Thursday the Kirkland, Que., native became the first player from the province to be granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada.

Veleno played as an underager with the Lac St-Louis Lions of the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League, racking up 16 goals and 52 points in 41 games.

“We are very excited about this day and what it means to our team, our fans, our organization and our league,” Sea Dogs general manager Darrell Young said in a news release. “This is an historical day and we are so pleased to be a part of it. We are extremely happy to select Joseph Veleno and welcome him and his family into the Sea Dog family.”

After Veleno went off the board, Acadie-Bathurst selected forward Antoine Morand second overall, Victoriaville picked Maxime Comtois at No. 3, and Cape Breton took forward Shane bowers at fourth. Val-d’Or rounded out the top five with the selection of goalie Dereck Baribeau.
