WHL: Johnson hat trick helps Rebels rout Blades

RED DEER, Alta. — Wyatt Johnson scored a hat trick and added an assist as the Red Deer Rebels routed the Saskatoon Blades 7-1 on Wednesday night in Western Hockey League action.

Michael Spacek, Austin Pratt, Ivan Nikolishin and Colton Bobyk supplied the rest of the offence for the Rebels (8-4-0), who won their third straight. Conner Bleackley and Grayson Pawlenchuk tacked on two assists apiece.

Nick Zajac opened the scoring with a short-handed goal in the first period for Saskatoon (4-3-3).

Rylan Toth started in goal for Red Deer but gave way to Trevor Martin after kicking out 2-of-3 shots in 5:25. Martin stopped all 15 shots he faced in 54:35 of relief. Nik Amundrud made 25 saves for the Blades.

The Rebels scored once on six power-play chances while Saskatoon was scoreless on four opportunities.

Blades forward Connor Gay received a major penalty and game misconduct for cross checking at 8:52 of the second period. Red Deer’s Haydn Fleury was ejected in the same stoppage after a major for checking to the head.

WARRIORS 6, BRONCOS 1
MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Brett Howden had a hat trick as the Warriors won their third straight by toppling Swift Current.

Brayden Point added a goal and three assists while Dryden Hunt had two goals and two assists for No. 6 nationally-ranked Moose Jaw (7-1-2).

Jon Martin responded in the third period for the Broncos (4-6-1), who dropped their third in a row.

Swift Current’s Kade Jensen received a major penalty for cross checking at 15:55 of the third period.

BLAZERS 3, ROYALS 2
KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Collin Shirley struck twice as the Blazers edged Victoria.

Matt Needham found the back of the net in the second period for Kamloops (3-7-0).

Dante Hannoun and Vladimir Bobylev scored for the Royals (7-4-0).

COUGARS 5, HITMEN 0
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Mack Shields stopped all 23 shots he faced as the Cougars blanked Calgary.

Jesse Gabrielle had a pair of goals for Prince George (5-4-0). Brogan O’Brien, Shane Collins and Jared Bethune rounded out the attack.

Lasse Petersen started for the Hitmen (6-5-1) and turned away 5-of-8 shots in 20 minutes. Kyle Dumba made 27 saves in relief.

WHEAT KINGS 4, CHIEFS 3 (SO)
SPOKANE, Wash. — Rihards Bukarts scored the only goal of the shootout as Brandon slipped past the Chiefs.

John Quenneville, Nolan Patrick and Ivan Provorov found the back of the net in regulation for the No. 3 Wheat Kings (7-1-2).

Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Kailler Yamamoto and Riley Whittingham chipped in for Spokane (3-5-2).

THUNDERBIRDS 3, AMERICANS 2
KENT, Wash. — Ethan Bear had a pair of goals to lead the Thunderbirds past Tri-City.

Scott Eansor also scored for No. 8 Seattle (6-1-1), which got two assists from Jamal Watson.

Michael Rasmussen and Morgan Geekie supplied the offence for the Americans (4-5-1).
