Bittner scores in OT, Winterhawks upset Rockets

PORTLAND, Ore. – The last-place Portland Winterhawks delivered a big upset on Saturday night.

Paul Bittner scored his seventh of the year at 2:58 of overtime as the Winterhawks beat the first-place Kelowna Rockets 3-2 in Western Hockey League action.

Oliver Bjorkstrand had a short-handed goal in the first period while Ethan Price chipped in with his first goal of the season for Portland (6-10-2).

Rourke Chartier and Devante Stephens replied for the Rockets (13-1-1).

Michael Bullion made 31 saves in goal for Portland while Jackson Whistle turned aside 36 shots for Kelowna.

The Winterhawks went 0 for 3 on the power play while the Rockets failed to score on either of their opportunities with the man advantage.

RAIDERS 5 BLADES 2

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Sawyer Lange had a goal and three assists to lead the Raiders past Saskatoon.

Mackenze Stewart, Tomas Andrlik, Craig Leverton and Josh Morrissey also scored for Prince Albert (8-9-0).

Ryan Graham and Alex Forsberg found the back of the net for the Blades (5-11-0).

WARRIORS 2 HITMEN 1

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Jack Rodewald had the game-winning goal in the second period as the Warriors held off Calgary.

Kolten Olynek scored a short-handed goal in the first period for Moose Jaw (7-9-1).

Radel Fazleev replied late in the third period for the Hitmen (7-8-1).

ICE 6 HURRICANES 5 (OT)

CRANBROOK, B.C. — Jaedon Descheneau struck just 10 seconds into overtime in Kootenay’s win over Lethbridge.

Levi Cable scored twice and added an assist in regulation for the Ice (4-13-0). Bryan Allbee, Luke Philp and Rinat Valiev rounded out the attack.

Zane Jones recorded a hat trick for the Hurricanes (5-9-3), with Taylor Cooper and Jamal Watson also providing offence.

PATS 2 BRONCOS 1 (SO)

REGINA — Morgan Klimchuk had a goal in both the shootout and regulation in the Pats’ win over Swift Current.

Connor Gay also scored in the shootout for Regina (8-8-1).

Captain Colby Cave had a power-play goal in the second period for the Broncos (10-7-2).

WHEAT KINGS 4 TIGERS 0

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Jordan Papirny made 33 saves for the shutout in Brandon’s win over the Tigers.

Jesse Gabrielle, Tim McGauley, Reid Duke and Quintin Lisoway supplied the remainder of the offence for the Wheat Kings (14-3-1).

Marek Langhamer turned away 20 shots for Medicine Hat (11-3-1).

REBELS 2 CHIEFS 1

SPOKANE, Wash. — Evan Polei had a power-play goal at 12:55 of the third period to get Red Deer by the Chiefs.

Tyler Sandhu rounded out the attack for the Rebels (8-7-1).

Markson Bechtold scored a late third-period goal for Spokane (7-4-3).

SILVERTIPS 3 OIL KINGS 0

EVERETT, Wash. — Austin Lotz kicked out 21 shots for the Silvertips as they blanked Edmonton.

Remi Laurencelle, Cole MacDonald and Ivan Nikolishin all chipped in for Everett (10-1-3).

Tristan Jarry had 28 saves for the Oil Kings (9-5-2).

COUGARS 4 BLAZERS 1

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Brad Morrison, Marc McNulty and Jansen Harkins all scored first-period goals to lead the Cougars past Kamloops.

Tate Olson rounded out the Prince George (9-8-0) attack.

Ryan Rehill responded with a first-period goal of his own for the Blazers (9-8-1).

ROYALS 4 AMERICANS 1

VICTORIA — Axel Blomqvist struck twice for the Royals as they skated past Tri-City.

Logan Fisher and Austin Carroll also found the back of the net for Victoria (9-7-1).

Maxwell James had a first-period goal for the Americans (8-8-0).

GIANTS 1 THUNDERBIRDS 0

SEATTLE — Cody Porter kicked out 38 shots for Vancouver as it blanked the Thunderbirds.

Alec Baer scored his sixth goal of the year on the power play in the third period for the Giants (7-8-0).

Taran Kozun made 23 saves for Seattle (6-6-0).
