WHL Roundup: Brennan Menell scores OT winner as Hurricanes top Pats

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Brennan Menell scored 3:12 into overtime to lift the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-4 victory over the Regina Pats on Wednesday in Western Hockey League action.

Tyler Wong and Ryan Bowen had a goal and two assists apiece and Tanner Nagel and Jordy Bellerive also scored for Lethbridge (15-11-4), which has won eight of its last 10 games.

Sam Steel struck twice for the Pats (20-2-5) and Adam Brooks and Jake Leschyshyn supplied the rest of the offence.

Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped 42 shots. Regina’s Tyler Brown made 28 saves.

HITMEN 4 BLADES 3

SASKATOON — Beck Malenstyn’s second of the game 39 seconds into the third period stood as the winner as Calgary edged the Blades.

Jake Bean and Matt Dorsey also scored for the Hitmen (10-14-2), who got four consecutive goals to go ahead 4-2.

Libor Hajek, Jesse Shynkaruk and Braylon Shmyr, with a goal and an assist, supplied the offence for Saskatoon (11-18-2).

REBELS 4 TIGERS 2

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Adam Musil scored twice, including an empty-netter 18:54 into the third period, as Red Deer doubled up the Tigers.

Josh Mahura and Evan Polei also scored for the Rebels (15-12-4) while Musil added an assist for a three-point night.

Steve Owre and Ryan Jevne scored for Medicine Hat (21-9-1) in their fourth straight loss and Clayton Kirichenko picked up assists on both goals.

COUGARS 5 WHEAT KINGS 1

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Jesse Gabrielle and Brad Morrison had two goals each to power the Cougars past Brandon.

Joel Lakusta also scored for Prince George (21-7-2).

Stelio Mattheos had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings (13-12-4), who have lost four straight (0-3-1).

ROCKETS 6 THUNDERBIRDS 1

KELOWNA, B.C. — Calvin Thurkauf recorded a hat trick to lead the Rockets over Seattle.

Jake Krysku and Tomas Soustal had a goal and an assist apiece and Rodney Southam also scored for Kelowna (17-11-1).

Ryan Gropp scored for the Thunderbirds (15-10-3), on a power play midway through the second period.

AMERICANS 4 SILVERTIPS 3 (OT)

EVERETT, Wash. — Jordan Topping scored 2:04 into overtime to lift Tri-City over the Silvertips.

Morgan Geekie assisted on the winner and scored twice in regulation for the Americans (18-11-2) and Kyle Olson also scored. Parker Wotherspoon had two helpers.

Noah Juulsen, Jake Christiansen and Patrick Bajkov had goals for Everett (20-3-5).

ROYALS 6 CHIEFS 5 (OT)

SPOKANE, Wash. — Matthew Phillips scored his second of the game 3:02 into overtime as Victoria slipped past the Chiefs.

Phillips also tacked on two assists for a four-point outing for the Royals (16-13-2). Regan Nagy, Jared Dmytriw, Marsel Ibragimov and Dante Hannoun also scored.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan struck three times for Spokane (11-11-6). Marson Bechtold had two goals and an assist.
