WHL roundup: Hart saves 19 as Silvertips blank Cougars

BRANDON, Man. — Evan Weinger’s empty-net goal became the winner as the Portland Winterhawks edged the Brandon Wheat Kings 7-6 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Weinger scored his goal at the 18:52 mark of the third period to give Portland a 7-5 lead, but Nolan Patrick scored for Brandon with four seconds left to play to make it the decisive goal.

Joachim Blichfeld had a goal and two assists for the Winterhawks (6-3-0), while Lane Gilliss, Keoni Texeira, Alex Overhardt, Keegan Iverson and Cody Glass chipped in as well.

Tanner Kaspick struck twice for the Wheat Kings (2-3-1) in the second period, while Jordan Wharrie, Ty Lewis and Reid Duke also scored.

Cole Kehler earned the win with 40 saves. Jordan Papirny stopped 29-of-35 shots in net for Brandon.

Portland went 5 for 9 on the power play and the Wheat Kings were 2 for 9.

GIANTS 2, OIL KINGS 0

EDMONTON — Ryan Kubic stopped all 28 shots he faced as Vancouver shut out the Oil Kings.

Radovan Bondra and Tyler Benson supplied the offence for the Giants (3-7-0), who have back-to-back wins.

Liam Hughes made 18 saves on 19 shots for Edmonton (3-4-1).

ROYALS 5, TIGERS 1

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Blake Bargar had the eventual winner in the second period as Victoria skated past the Tigers.

Tyler Soy had a goal and an assist for the Royals (4-4-0), while Dante Hannoun, Matthew Phillips and Jared Dmytriw also scored.

Max Gerlach replied for Medicine Hat (5-3-0), which has lost two straight.

SILVERTIPS 4, COUGARS 0

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Carter Hart made 19 saves as Everett blanked the Cougars.

Devon Skoleski, Sean Richards, Dominic Zwerger and Brett Kemp scored for the Silvertips (5-1-1).

Ty Edmonds turned aside 23 shots in Prince George’s (8-1-0) first loss of the season.

CHIEFS 3, THUNDERBIRDS 1

KENT, Wash. — Kailer Yamamoto had the winner 40 seconds into the third period as Spokane topped Seattle.

Pavel Kousal and Curtis Miske rounded out the attack for the Chiefs (2-3-0).

Scott Eansor responded for the Thunderbirds (2-3-0).
