WHL Roundup: Hawryluk hat trick fuels Wheat Kings

RED DEER, Alta. — Colton Bobyk scored twice in the opening 3:13 of the first period and added an assist as the Red Deer Rebels downed the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-2 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Austin Pratt also had a pair of goals for the Rebels (45-24-3). Jeff de Wit, Luke Philp and Adam Helewka rounded out the attack.

Brett Pollock replied in the third with a pair of goals for Edmonton (29-36-7).

Trevor Martin stopped all 21 shots he faced in 40 minutes for the win in net. Dawson Weatherill turned away 10-of-12 shots in relief. Payton Lee took the loss after kicking out 19-of-25 shots in 40 minutes. Carter Phair stopped five shots in the third.

Red Deer was 4 for 7 on the power play while the Oil Kings scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

WHEAT KINGS 3 PATS 0

BRANDON, Man. — Jayce Hawryluk scored a hat trick and Jordan Papriny made 17 saves as the Wheat Kings shut out Regina.

Mitch Wheaton and Tanner Kaspick tacked on two assists apiece for Brandon (48-18-6), which improved its recent run to 11-0-2.

Tyler Brown turned away 48-of-51 shots for the Pats (36-28-8), who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

WARRIORS 3 BRONCOS 1

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Noah Gregor had a goal and an assist as the Warriors toppled Swift Current.

Patrik Maier opened the scoring with Dryden Hunt adding his 58th of the season in the second for Moose Jaw (36-27-9).

Glenn Gawdin responded for the Broncos (24-38-10).

SASKATOON — Nikita Soshnin scored the winner in the third period as the Blades snapped a six-game skid with a win over Prince Albert.

Cameron Hebig and Nolan Reid, on the power play, also chipped in for Saskatoon (26-42-4).

Tim Vanstone and Simon Stransky found the back of the net for the Raiders (38-26-8).

TIGERS 4 HURRICANES 2

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Brian Williams scored the eventual winner in the third period as the Tigers doubled up Lethbridge.

Ty Schultz, Ryan Jevne and Zach Fischer also chipped in for Medicine Hat (30-37-5).

Arvin Atwal and Jordy Bellerive had goals for the Hurricanes (46-24-2).

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Dylan Ferguson stopped all 38 shots he faced as Kamloops shut out the Cougars for its ninth straight win.

Nick Chyzowski and Ondrej Vala scored for the Blazers (38-25-9).

Nick McBride turned away 35-of-37 shots in net for Prince George (36-31-5).

ROYALS 4 SILVERTIPS 1

VICTORIA — Tyler Soy struck twice as the Royals toppled Everett.

Matthew Phillips and Vladimir Bobylev had the others for Victoria (50-16-6), which won for the 13th time in its last 14 games.

Cole MacDonald found the back of the net in the second for the Silvertips (38-26-8).

THUNDERBIRDS 4 WINTERHAWKS 3 (SO)

KENT, Wash. — Keegan Kolesar and Donovan Neuls scored in the shootout as the Thunderbirds edged Portland.

Ethan Bear led the Seattle (44-23-4) offence in regulation with a goal and two assists. Alexander True and Scott Eansor also chipped in as the Thunderbirds improved to 12-0-1 in their last 13 games.

Jack Dougherty, Rihards Bukarts and Colton Veloso supplied the offence for the Winterhawks (34-30-7).

ROCKETS 10 GIANTS 1

KELOWNA, B.C. — Tyson Baillie and Calvin Thurkauf had two goals apiece as the Rockets routed Vancouver.

Justin Kirkland, Rourke Chartier, Jordan Borstmayer, Tanner Wishnowski, Lucas Johansen and Riley Stadel supplied the rest of the offence for Kelowna (48-20-4).

Dakota Odgers replied in the second for the Giants (23-40-9).

AMERICANS 5 CHIEFS 3

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Nolan Yaremko’s power-play goal just past the midway point of the third period proved to be the winner as the Americans beat Spokane for their fourth straight win.

Brandon Carlo and Morgan Geekie opened the scoring for Tri-City (35-34-3) in the first period. Parker Bowles added a power-play goal in the second before Mackenze Stewart wrapped up the attack with an empty netter in the third.

Jason Fram, Markson Bechtold and Jacob Cardiff had goals for the Chiefs (33-30-9).
