WHL Roundup: Phillips leads Royals over Winterhawks

PORTLAND, Ore. – Matthew Phillips scored once and set up two more as the Victoria Royals downed the Portland Winterhawks 4-2 on Wednesday in Western Hockey League action.

Tanner Kaspick scored the eventual winner at 11:14 of the third period for the Royals (26-16-4), who also got another from Tyler Soy.

Skyler McKenzie and Cody Glass scored for the Winterhawks (26-14-4).

Griffen Outhouse made 28 saves for the win as Cole Kehler turned away 22 shots in defeat.

The Royals went 0 for 3 on the power play while the Winterhakws were 2 for 3.

PATS 4 RAIDERS 3

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Matt Bradley scored twice as Regina slipped past the Raiders for its fourth win in five games.

Jesse Gabrielle and Jake Leschyshyn also scored for the Pats (24-19-4), who got a 34-save outing from Ryan Kubic.

Vojtech Budik, Curtis Miske and Jordy Stallard scored for Prince Albert (16-20-8). Curtis Meger turned away 29 shots in defeat.

ICE 4 TIGERS 3

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Brett Davis scored the winner with four seconds to play in regulation as Kootenay came from behind to topple the Tigers.

Martin Bodak had a pair of goals and Michael King also scored for the Ice (20-22-3), who trailed 3-1 before storming back. Duncan McGovern made 34 saves for the win.

Mark Rassell, James Hamblin and Ryan Chyzowski built up an early lead for Medicine Hat (24-18-4). Jordan Hollett stopped 18 shots in a losing cause.

ROCKETS 4 HURRICANES 3 (OT)

KELOWNA, B.C. — Cal Foote scored at 2:55 of overtime as the Rockets halted Lethbridge’s win streak at four games.

Dillon Dube, Kole Lind and Conner Bruggen-Cate also scored for Kelowna (28-13-3). Brodan Salmond made 31 saves for the victory.

Jordy Bellerive, Tate Olson and Taylor Ross found the back of the net for the Hurricanes (21-19-4). Reece Klassen took the loss, making 31 saves.

THUNDERBIRDS 7 COUGARS 4

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Dillon Hamaliuk registered the winner at 4:55 of the third period as Seattle got past the Cougars.

Mike MacLean, Matthew Wedman, Jaxan Kaluski, Sami Moilanen, Zack Andrusiak and Nolan Volcan also scored for the Thunderbirds (22-16-6). Dorrin Luding made 18 saves for the win.

The Cougars’ (17-22-7) offence came from Aaron Boyd, Max Kryski, Josh Maser and Jack Sander. Taylor Gauthier kicked out 37-of-44 shots in a losing cause.

CHIEFS 3 WHEAT KINGS 0

SPOKANE, Wash. — Bailey Brkin stopped all 21 shots his way as the Chiefs blanked Brandon.

Kailer Yamamoto, Ethan McIndoe and Milos Fafrak supplied the Spokane (23-19-3) offence.

Logan Thompson kicked out 32 shots for the What Kings (28-13-3).

BRONCOS 3 AMERICANS 2 (OT)

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Aleksi Heponiemi scored his second goal of the night at 2:23 of overtime to lift Swift Current over Tri-City.

Matteo Gennaro also scored for the Broncos (32-10-3), with Heponiemi picking up an assist. Stuart Skinner made 24 saves for the win.

Jordan Topping and Jake Bean scored for the Americans (22-16-6), who got a 37-save outing from Patrick Dea.
