WHL Roundup: Popugaev’s late winner powers Warriors past Ice

CRANBROOK, B.C. — Nikita Popugaev scored with 5:11 left in the third period as the Moose Jaw Warriors slipped past the Kootenay Ice 3-2 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Brett Howden also scored in the third for Moose Jaw (3-0-1), while Jett Woo had a goal in the second. Brody Willms made 32 saves for the win.

Dylan Stewart and Keenan Taphorn supplied the offence for Kootenay (0-3-2). Jakob Walter stopped 32 shots in net for the Ice.

Neither team scored on the power play. The Warriors couldn’t score on their one man advantage and Kootenay went 0 for 2.

BRONCOS 7 WINTERHAWKS 2

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Glenn Gawdin struck twice and added an assist in the Broncos rout of Portland.

Artyom Minulin had a goal and three assists for Swift Current (4-2-0) and Lane Pederson scored and added two assists. Riley Stotts, Tyler Steenbergen and Aleksi Heponiemi rounded out the Broncos’ attack.

Skyler McKenzie, Colton Veloso and Joachim Blichfeld replied for the Winterhawks (3-2-0).
