WHL Roundup: Winquist extends point streak

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Joshua Winquist scored twice and set up one more as the Everett Silvertips edged the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-3 on Friday in Western Hockey League play.

Winquist extended his point streak to 15 games, which includes 13 goals and 35 points.

Matt Pufahl had a goal and an assist for the Silvertips (18-4-4) and Tyler Sandhu scored once.

Curtis Valk replied for Medicine Hat (16-6-3) with two goals and Trevor Cox had a goal and an assist.

Everett’s Austin Lotz made 23 saves for the win as Daniel Wapple stopped 28 shots for the Tigers.

WARRIORS 5 RAIDERS 1

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — The Warriors scored five times in the first period en route to defeating Prince Albert.

Erik Benoit and Torrin White each scored twice for Moose Jaw (8-16-4) and Travis Brown had a goal and an assist.

Reid Gardiner scored the lone goal for the Raiders (14-9-2).

Justin Paulic made 34 saves for the Warriors. Prince Albert’s Cole Cheveldave gave up three goals on 13 shots and was pulled 11 minutes into the game for Nick McBride, who stopped 14-of-16 shots in relief.

BLADES 5 HURRICANES 2

SASKATOON — Alex Moodie turned away 39 shots as the Blades toppled Lethbridge.

Nikita Scherbak scored twice and set up one more for Saskatoon (10-14-3) while Brett Stovin, Collin Valcourt and Nick Zajac had the others.

Tyler Wong scored both goals for the Hurricanes (3-19-4), who sit last in the WHL standings.

Lethbridge’s Corbin Boes stopped 37-of-41 shots in a losing cause.

COUGARS 8 OIL KINGS 3

EDMONTON — Todd Fiddler had three goals and two assists as Prince George crushed the Oil Kings.

Troy Bourke had two goals and two assists for the Cougars (10-14-4), Chase Witala scored twice and Klarc Wilson had a goal and two assists.

Aaron Irving, Mitchell Moroz and Brett Pollock responded for Edmonton (14-9-1) and Henrik Samuelsson tacked on two assists.

Prince George’s Brett Zarowny made 39 saves for the win. Tyler Santos took the loss for the Oil Kings after allowing six goals on 17 shots. Tristan Jarry replaced Santos and stopped 15-of-17 shots in 31 minutes of relief.

ICE 7 WHEAT KINGS 3

CRANBROOK, B.C. — Sam Reinhart scored three times as Kootenay defeated Brandon.

Levi Cable added two goals for the Ice (14-11-2) while Jon Martin and Zak Zborosky added single goals.

Ryan Pilon, Peter Quenneville and Ryley Lindren supplied the offence for the Wheat Kings (13-12-1).

Kootenay’s Wyatt Hoflin made 28 saves for the win as Jordan Papirny and Christopher Tai combined to allow seven goals on 28 shots.

PATS 4 REBELS 3 (SO)

RED DEER, Alta. — Boston Leier scored the shootout winner as Regina slipped past the Rebels.

Chandler Stephenson and Dyson Stevenson each had a goal and an assist for the Pats (14-11-0) while Geordie Maguire scored once.

Red Deer (11-12-0) got goals from Brooks Maxwell, Adam Musil and Dominek Volek.

Dawson MacAuley made 27 saves for the win. Patrik Bartosak turned away 36-of-39 shots in defeat.

WINTERHAKWS 6 CHIEFS 4

PORTLAND, Ore. — Nicolas Petan scored once and set up three more as the Winterhawks defeated Spokane.

Brendan Leipsic had two goals and an assist for Portland (18-5-2) while Garret Haar, Taylor Leier and Derrick Pouliot added singles.

Adam Helewka, Mike Aviani, Riley Whittingham and Connor Chartier scored for the Chiefs (16-8-1) and WHL leading scorer Mitch Holmberg chipped in with two assists.

Brendan Burke made 31 saves for the Winterhawks. Spokane’s Garret Hughson stopped 27 shots in defeat.

ROCKETS 4 AMERICANS 1

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Madison Bowey scored twice as Kelowna defeated Tri-City.

Rourke Chartier and Cole Linaker also scored for the Rockets (17-3-2) and Nick Merkley had two assists.

Brian Williams supplied the scoring for the Americans (14-11-2).

Jordon Cooke made 18 saves for Kelowna while Evan Sarthou stopped 42-of-45 shots for Tri-City.

ROYALS 6 BLAZERS 1

VICTORIA — Austin Carroll scored once and assisted on two more as the Royals beat Kamloops.

Ben Walker, Brandon Magee and Logan Nelson each had a goal and assist for Victoria (16-10-1) while Taylor Crunk and Brandon Fushimi added single goals.

Chase Souto put the Blazers (6-16-3) on the board with a second-period goal.

Patrik Polivka made 34 saves for the Royals. Kamloops’ Taran Kozun allowed four goals on 24 shots before giving way to Bolton Pouliot, who stopped 7-of-9 shots in 14 minutes of relief.

GIANTS 6 THUNDERBIRDS 3

VANCOUVER — Jackson Houck had a goal and two assists and Carter Popoff helped out with three assists as the Giants doubled up Seattle.

Luca Leone, Trace Elson, Joel Hamilton, Rob Trzonkowski and Brett Kulak also scored for Vancouver (11-11-5).

Roberts Lipsbergs, Jared Hauf and Jaimen Yakubowski scored for the Thunderbirds (12-9-4) and Shea Theodore had two assists.

Jared Rathjen made 24 saves for the Giants while Seattle’s Danny Mumaugh gave up five goals on 31 shots in 40 minutes of action. Justin Myles played the third period for the Thunderbirds and stopped 4-of-5 shots in relief.
