WHL Roundup: Winterhawks tame listless Tigers

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – Alex Schoenborn and Evan Weinger both had two goals and an assist as the Portland Winterhawks routed the Medicine Hat Tigers 8-1 on Saturday night in Western Hockey League action.

Alex Overhardt had a goal and three assists for the Winterhawks (31-25-3). Conor MacEachern, Dominic Turgeon and Skyler McKenzie supplied the rest of the offence.

Max Gerlach scored the lone goal for Medicine Hat (21-34-4).

Adin Hill made 34 saves for the win in net. Nick Schneider took the loss after turning aside 22-of-28 shots in 40 minutes for the Tigers. Mack Shields went the rest of the way — kicking out 5-of-7 shots.

Portland scored twice on four power plays while Medicine Hat was scoreless on four attempts.

BRONCOS 4 ICE 2

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Jamal Watson scored the first of three-straight goals in the third period as the Broncos doubled up Kootenay.

Tyler Steenbergen and Glenn Gawdin also chipped in during the third for Swift Current (21-30-7). Dom Schmiemann had a power-play goal in the second.

Dallas Hines and Zak Zborosky had goals for the Ice (10-44-5).

OIL KINGS 3 WARRIORS 2

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Dario Meyer scored the eventual winner in the second as Edmonton topped the Warriors.

Tyler Robertson and Brett Pollock rounded out the attack for the Oil Kings (25-27-7).

Tanner Jeannot and Dryden Hunt had goals for Moose Jaw (30-22-8).

BLADES 2 RAIDERS 1 (OT)

SASKATOON — Cameron Hebig scored 25 seconds into overtime as the Blades slipped past Prince Albert.

Logan Christensen opened the scoring in the first period for Saskatoon (22-33-4), which won its third in a row.

Layne Bensmiller tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the third for the Raiders (31-20-8).

HITMEN 3 HURRICANES 2

CALGARY — Jakob Stukel struck twice as the Hitmen edged Lethbridge.

Dawson Martin added the other in the third period for Calgary (34-22-3).

Cory Millette and Ryan Vandervlis scored for the Hurricanes (40-19-1).

GIANTS 4 ROCKETS 2

VANCOUVER — Trevor Cox and Thomas Foster had power-play goals in a three-goal third period as the Giants doubled up Kelowna.

Chase Lang and Carter Popoff also scored while Ty Ronning chipped in with three assists for Vancouver (22-1-7), which snapped a four-game skid.

Lucas Johansen and Tyson Baillie found the back of the net for the Rockets (41-16-3), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

REBELS 2 COUGARS 1

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Ivan Nikolishin scored the winner as Red Deer halted a five-game skid by edging the Cougars.

Luke Philip opened the scoring in the first for the Rebels (36-21-3).

Tate Olson had a power-play goal late in the second for Prince George (32-23-4).

CHIEFS 4 AMERICANS 2

SPOKANE, Wash. — Hudson Elynuik had a pair of goals as the Chiefs snapped Tri-City’s three-game winning streak.

Ethan McIndoe and Jacob Cardiff also scored in a three-goal first period for Spokane (28-22-8).

Parker Wotherspoon and Parker Bowles found the back of the net in the second for the Americans (28-27-3).

SILVERTIPS 4 THUNDERBIRDS 3

EVERETT, Wash. — Remi Laurencelle struck twice as the Silvertips ended Seattle’s four-game unbeaten streak.

Devon Skoleski and Carson Stadnyk also chipped in for Everett (34-20-4).

Ryan Gropp, Donovan Neuls and Ethan Bear supplied the offence for the Thunderbirds (32-23-3).

ROYALS 6 BLAZERS 3

VICTORIA — Vladimir Bobylev scored twice and added an assist as the Royals got past Kamloops.

Tyler Soy had a goal and three assists, with Jack Walker, Matthew Phillips and Dante Hannoun also chipping in for Victoria (40-16-6).

Matt Needham, Spencer Bast and Matthew Campese scored for the Blazers (27-24-8).
