Five things we learned in the NHL Tuesday

Kings in white, a snotty situation and a record-breaking shootout. Here are five things we learned on Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Kings aren’t the only team to wear white pants.

The Kings released photos of their new Stadium Series jerseys Tuesday, and the internet had a field day. While the jersey was, um, polarizing, it’s the white pants that seemed to especially trouble many critics. It should probably be pointed out, then, that the Kings aren’t the only team to rock this look. The Washington Capitals paired red jerseys with white pants for a few games at the beginning of 1974-75 season. Those were stark days, indeed.

Giroux needs a tissue

This may look like just a normal faceoff between the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning, but a closer look will reveal that it’s snot:

The Edmonton Oilers still can’t catch a break.

To say the Edmonton Oilers have been through a lot in the past 24 hours would be an understatement. So it seemed unlikely that, after surrendering 27 shots on goal in the second period alone versus the Arizona Coyotes (the most any team has allowed in one period this season), Edmonton would end regulation tied 1-1. Just when it looked like the Oilers had a fighting chance of pushing for a possible shootout win, Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with 0.3 seconds remaining in overtime to win it for the Coyotes and give the Oilers their fifth-straight loss.

The Blue Jackets are on a roll

It’s hard to ignore the fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs are on a roll — their victory against the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday marks six straight wins. But it’s time we start paying attention to everyone’s second-favourite team, the Columbus Blue Jackets. After a string of injuries held the Blue Jackets back during the first quarter of the season, they’ve been quietly climbing back, winning their seventh consecutive game by shutting out the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday. It’s safe to say that Columbus could get back in the race.

This is the shootout that never ends

Let’s be honest: It’s not every day we’re glued to our screens during a Florida Panthers game. But after their game against the Washington Capitals was deadlocked after 65 minutes, the game went on to a shootout… 20 rounds later, it became the longest shootout in NHL history. (The previous record was 15 rounds, set by the 2005-06 New York Rangers and Washington Capitals.) The Panthers eventually won on a goal from Nick Bjugstad.

The exciting — and exhausting — affair was perhaps best summed up by everyone’s favourite tweeting netminder:
