Alex Ovechkin leaves game after Nazem Kadri hit, returns in second period

Nazem Kadri would be given a two minute penalty for this hit on Alexander Ovechkin.

The Washington Capitals experienced a scare in the first period of Friday night’s Game 5 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As Alex Ovechkin was skating up the ice, Toronto’s Nazem Kadri caught him with a low check that appeared to make contact with Ovechkin’s knee. Kadri was attempting to deliver a hip check on the Capitals star and received a two-minute minor for tripping on the play. The Capitals scored the game’s first goal oon the ensuing power play.

Ovechkin stayed on the ice after first attempting to get up on his own power. He needed help leaving the ice.

UPDATE: Although Ovechkin missed the remainder of the first period, he returned at the start of the second.
