Alex Ovechkin misses skate due to personal reasons

Alex Ovechkin scored a stunning go-ahead goal early in the third period and set up another and the Washington Capitals opened their season with a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Alex Ovechkin missed Tuesday’s morning skate due to personal reasons, Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz told reporters.

The captain will be a game-time decision for Tuesday’s match versus the San Jose Sharks (2-0-0) at Verizon Center. Both teams are undefeated.

Ovechkin scored a highlight-reel goal and added an assist in the Capitals’ opener Saturday, a 5-3 victory over the visiting New Jersey Devils.

If Ovechkin misses the game, Trotz said Marcus Johansson would likely move up to the top line.
