The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenceman David Savard to a five-year extension, the team announced Tuesday morning.

The deal, which will kick in following the 2015-16 season, is worth a reported $21.25 million and will carry a cap hit of $4.25 million.

“Getting David signed to a contract extension was a priority for us and we are very happy to have reached a long-term deal with him,” Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said in the team’s press release. “He has taken tremendous steps the past two seasons and responded very well to the larger role he played on our blueline last season. We are excited about his future with the Blue Jackets.”

Savard, 24, registered 11 goals and 36 points for a career high last season.
