The St. Louis Blues placed defenceman Alex Pietrangelo on injured reserve on Tuesday with a lower-body injury.

In a corresponding move, defenceman Jordan Schmaltz has been recalled from the San Antonio Rampage.

The injury occurred on Dec. 9 during the first period of the Blues’ 6-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings when the captain blocked a shot with his foot and left the game. While he did manage to return to action that night, Pietrangelo sat out of Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.

The 27-year-old is in the midst of a career year and has already scored seven goals paired with 16 assists. He ranks fifth among defencemen in scoring.
