The St. Louis Blues have effectively derailed any future courtship of forward Alexander Steen, signing the 32-year-old to a four-year, $23-million contract extension Friday.
Steen is entering the final year of a three-year, $17.4-million deal with a cap hit of $5.8 million for the 2016-17 season. He will earn $5.75 million against the cap under his new contract, which kicks in ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
“We are extremely excited to have Alexander signed for the next four seasons,” Blues president of hockey operations and GM Doug Armstrong said in a release. “He has developed into one of the league’s premier 200-foot players and is a key member of our leadership group. He has shown tremendous loyalty to the Blues organization, its fans and the St. Louis community.”
Steen is set to begin his ninth season with the Blues after arriving via trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2008.
The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, scored 17 goals and totalled 52 points in 67 games with the Blues last season. Steen notched 12 of his 17 goals at even-strength and led all Blues forwards in average time-on-ice with 20:22 per night.
The Maple Leafs originally selected Steen in the first round, 24th overall, in the 2002 NHL Draft.
Steen has registered 197 goals and 481 points in 746 career NHL games.
