San Jose Sharks defenceman Brad Stuart was suspended three games by the NHL for elbowing New York Rangers star forward Rick Nash Tuesday night.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety deliberated on the suspension length during a hearing Wednesday.

Nash left Tuesday’s 9-2 road loss to Sharks after he was hit with a high elbow by Stuart early in the first period.

Stuart was given a two-minute minor for elbowing, while Nash appeared shaken up as he made his way to the Rangers bench.

Nash returned to the game briefly, registering just under six minutes of ice time, but did not come out after the first intermission.

While Nash’s status is not known, he missed four games last season with a concussion after a hit from Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic.

Stuart forfeits $55,384.62 in salary with the money money going to the NHLPA’s Emergency Assistance Fund.

The Rocky Mountain House, Alta., native had been suspended one time in his NHL career. While in his second season with the Sharks back in 2001, Stuart was suspended for a cross check to the head of Florida Panthers forward Len Barrie.
