Brendan Gallagher may not participate in World Championships

Brendan Gallagher had a rough period, sustaining a lower body injury according to the team and taking a shot to the hand from his own captain.

MONTREAL — Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher is unsure if he’ll be able to participate in the upcoming World Championships, which are to be held in Russia this May.

Gallagher, who suffered a left knee injury in the first period of Montreal’s 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Mar. 5, has 19 goals and 19 assists in 52 games this season.

“I would obviously like to go and I’d love to play for Canada but I did a few things to my knee when I went down,” Gallagher said on Saturday morning. “I’m going to have to get things evaluated with the doctors here. Surgery is not in the plans, so I don’t expect to have to have it.

“Hopefully I can go to the Worlds but I’m not going to risk anything with next season here.”

Gallagher, who missed 12 games with the injury, has been practising and playing with a knee brace since returning.
