Shanahan won’t take over as Maple Leafs GM

Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox discuss all the speculation going on with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dan Carcillo’s meeting with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan won’t take over as the team’s general manager, according to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox.

With the Maple Leafs continuing to struggle nearly two weeks after firing head coach Randy Carlyle, the future of current GM Dave Nonis is becoming a topic of interest in Leaf Land.

Shanahan was introduced as president and alternate governor of the Maple Leafs last April. With the addition of assistant GM Kyle Dubas and an analytics department among other executive decisions, the former NHLers’ fingerprints are all over this team.

Nonis, however, was not hired by Shanahan. He was hired by Brian Burke as director of hockey operations in 2008 and took over as GM when Burke was fired in 2013.
