Brian Burke severed his final ties with the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday and returned to the club with whom he won a Stanley Cup, the Anaheim Ducks.

The Leafs and Ducks announced that Burke, who was fired as president and general manager of the Leafs in January, has assumed a part-time professional scouting position with Anaheim.

“We are happy to welcome Brian back to the organization,” said Ducks executive vice president and general manager Bob Murray in a press release. “Anytime you can add a person of his quality to your staff, it makes your organization better. We’ve had success working together before and look forward to doing it again.”

Since being relieved of his GM duties and replaced by Dave Nonis in Toronto, Burke had maintained a senior advisory role for the Maple Leafs.

“Brian and I discussed this opportunity after Anaheim approached the Leafs for permission to speak with him about a possible scouting role,” Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) president Tom Anselmi said via press release. “We both agreed that taking this role with Anaheim would best position Brian for his next general manager opportunity in the League. We have granted permission and we will terminate his consulting contract with MLSE so that he can pursue this role with Anaheim.”

Burke returns to California after originally serving as executive vice president and general manager for the Ducks from 2005 to 2008. Over his three-plus seasons with the club, the Ducks consistently made the playoffs and won their first and only Stanley Cup (2007).

Burke’s new role with the Ducks begins immediately.
