A brief look at P.K. Subban’s career so far

Eric Engels was shocked at the announcement that PK Subban has been traded to Nashville for Shea Weber, saying that this was the deal that was thought dead on the Draft floor.

MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens traded defenceman P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators on Wednesday afternoon in exchange for veteran blue-liner Shea Weber. Here’s a quick look at Subban’s career:

Junior Star: The Toronto native made his Ontario Hockey League debut with Belleville in 2005-’06. He spent four seasons with the Bulls and was an OHL first-team all-star in 2009.

Getting the Call: Subban played in two games with the Canadiens in the 2009-’10 season, spending most of the campaign with the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs. He was named to the AHL all-rookie team and first all-star team after posting 53 points in 77 games.

Full-Time Job: The six-foot 214-pound blue-liner was named to the NHL all-rookie team in 2011 after picking up 38 points (14-24) and 124 penalty minutes in 77 regular-season games. Subban averaged over 22 minutes a game.

Stud Defenceman: Subban really broke through in the lockout-shortened 2012-’13 season. He averaged nearly a point per game, was named to the first-team all-star team and won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman.

Polarizing Figure: Subban’s mix of youth, flashiness and charisma was loved by some but pooh-poohed by others in Montreal. His goal celebrations were often criticized for being over the top but many fans didn’t care as long as he kept filling the net.

Stylin’ and Profilin’: One of the snappiest dressers in the NHL, Subban is usually dressed to the nines. Crisp suits, flamboyant hats and colourful jackets are the norm.

Hot Quote: Reporters often beelined to Subban’s locker after games and he would fill their notebooks with great quotes. Not shy in front of the cameras, Subban would be a slam-dunk for a broadcasting gig once his playing days are over.

Helping Hand: Subban made a whopping $10-million donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital last year. The entrance to the facility was renamed the P.K. Subban Atrium.

Off the Ice: Subban was often spotted courtside during the Toronto Raptors’ playoff run last spring. He’s also teaming up with the Just For Laughs Festival for the "P.K. Subban’s All-Star Comedy Gala" in Montreal later this summer.
