Sabres send Reinhart down after nine games

Sam Reinhart buries his first NHL goal off a nice three-way passing play as the Sabres took on the Capitals in preseason play.

Unlike Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl, Sam Reinhart will not see a 10th game in the National Hockey League this season.

The Buffalo Sabres announced Friday that the rookie forward as been assigned to his junior team, the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League, thus saving the team from burning a year on Reinhart’s affordable entry-level contract.

During his nine-game peek at the NHL, the 18-year-old centre registered one assist and collected two penalty minutes.

A native of Vancouver, Reinhart was selected second overall by the Sabres at the 2014 NHL Draft. He skated an average of 10:21 per game with Buffalo and struggled in the face-off circle (24.4%).

Last season with Kootenay, Reinhart scored an incredible 105 points in 60 games and added another 23 points in 13 playoff games.
