By the time training camp ends, the Buffalo Sabres will have a captain.

Head coach Ted Nolan told reporters Tuesday the team will make a decision on who will wear the ‘C’ when camp comes to a close.

Last season, the Sabres rotated the captaincy between Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott prior to both players being traded during the season. Before Vanek and Ott, Jason Pominville served as the team’s captain before he was dealt to the Minnesota Wild during the 2012-13 campaign.

Brian Gionta, Josh Gorges and Matt Moulson are slated to wear the ‘A’ on their sweaters when the Sabres face the Carolina Hurricanes in pre-season action Tuesday–no one will don the ‘C’ for the Sabres.

Gionta, 35, joined the Sabres as a free agent in the summer after spending the last five seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. Gionta had served as Canadiens captain since the 2010-11 season. The Rochester, N.Y., native was only the second American to be named captain of the Canadiens.

Gorges, who was acquired by the Sabres in July, served as an alternate captain to Gionta with the Canadiens last season; the 30-year-old Kelowna, B.C., native is regarded as one of the most respected leaders in the league.

Other potential captaincy candidates include Moulson and Sabres veterans Drew Stafford and Tyler Myers.
