Flames’ Gaudreau going back to school for summer

Sean Monahan gets the goal but Johnny Gaudreau did some fancy footwork to get the puck in the right spot, turning Hampus Lindholm inside out.

Johnny Gaudreau’s summer won’t be one typical of a young NHL star. The Calgary Flames forward will go from Johnny Hockey to Johnny Textbook as he heads back to school to continue his education.

Gaudreau will resume his studies as a communications student at Boston College.

“Obviously, my mom wanted me to go back to school,” Gaudreau told the Calgary Sun. “But she’s happy for me. She’s going to make me go back to school and get my degree, for sure.”

Gaudreau made the decision to turn pro last year rather than returning for his senior year. It ended up being a great decision since the 21-year-old had a terrific rookie campaign, leading all freshmen in assists with 40 and tying Mark Stone for the rookie lead in scoring with 64 points in 80 games.

When the American heads back to his college campus later this week it will give him a chance to catch up with his old classmates.

“My senior class is still there and they’re graduating on the 18th so I’ll be able to be there and watch them graduate,” Gaudreau told the Sun. “I have a lot of buddies at school so it’ll be great to see them.”

In three seasons playing at Boston College the pint-sized winger scored 78 goals, 97 assists for 175 points in 119 games.
