Canadiens recall defenceman Mikhail Sergachev from OHL’s Spitfires

Watch as Montreal Canadiens prospect Mikhail Sergachev scores for the Windsor Spitfires against the London Knights.

The Montreal Canadiens recalled defenceman Mikhail Sergachev from the Windsor Spitfires on an emergency basis, the NHL team announced Saturday morning.

The ninth-overall pick from the 2016 NHL Draft played three games with the Canadiens back in October before being sent back down to the Ontario Hockey League where he registered 10 goals and 33 assists in 50 games. The Spitfires, hosts of this year’s Memorial Cup, were eliminated from the OHL playoffs earlier this week.

Sergachev had zero points, two shots, seven hits, a plus-1 rating and averaged 10:25 of ice-time in his three NHL contests.

The 18-year-old will join the Habs in Detroit as they prepare for their regular-season finale against the Red Wings. Andrei Markov, Shea Weber and Alexei Emelin are among the Canadiens players staying in Montreal to rest prior to the playoffs, which leaves a few holes on the blue line.

The Canadiens recalled Brett Lernout from the AHL on an emergency basis on Thursday, one day after Emelin suffered a lower-body injury against the Sabres.
