Montreal Canadiens defenceman Mark Streit was placed on waivers on Sunday for the purpose of terminating his contract, officially ending his time with the team.

The 39-year-old just cleared waivers after the Canadiens tried to to send him down to their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket. After none of the other 30 teams made a claim for Streit, CBC reported that Streit refused to report to the AHL, resulting in the move to terminate his contract.

Streit signed a one-year contract worth $700,000 in the off-season, returning to the team he first started his professional career with. He only played in two of Montreal’s games this season during which he recorded a minus-two rating.

In 786 career games, Streit has 96 goals and 338 assists.
