More bad news for the slumping Montreal Canadiens.

The team announced that defenceman Tom Gilbert is officially done for the season after suffering a left knee injury that requires surgery.

The team reported the news following their 2-1 shootout loss to the Nashville Predators Monday night.

Gilbert sustained the injured during the second period of Montreal’s 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 19, and was assessed by doctors earlier on Monday.

The pending UFA was just one name making the rounds as a potential depth rental in the NHL rumour mill heading into the trade deadline on Feb. 29.

The 33-year-old blue-liner has one goal and one assist in 45 games this season.

Victor Bartley has been called up from the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate in St. John’s.
