Vancouver Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a fracture of the metatarsal bone in his left foot, Sportsnet has learned.
Bieksa, who had been playing through pain the last few games, skipped Canucks practice on Thursday before undergoing an X-ray that revealed the hariline fracture.
Bieksa suffered the injury when he took a puck off the skate in Vancouver’s 4-0 win over the Nashville Predators on Nov. 4.
The six-foot-one, 205-pound Bieksa, who is in his fourth NHL season, leads all Canucks defencemen with 11 points (three goals and eight assists) and a plus-5 rating in 13 games.
A Grimsby, Ont., native, Bieksa was hoping to bounce back from an injury-plagued season in 2007-08. After missing most of last year’s training camp recovering from an abdominal injury, Bieksa started the season cold before a calf injury forced him to miss four months.
The Canucks are coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche after stringing together three straight shut out victories. Vancouver will host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
