Canucks sign G Michael Garteig to entry-level contract

Vancouver Canucks GM will not be heading the Toronto to take in the NHL Draft lottery, but is feeling good about the team’s draft odds, with a good chance of drafting a franchise player if they get into the top 3.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed free agent goaltender Michael Garteig to a one-year, entry-level contract.

The Prince George, B.C., native is coming off his senior season at Quinnipac University, where his Bobcats made it all the way to the national championship game, falling to the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks and fellow Canucks prospect Brock Boeser.

The Canucks’ AHL affiliate in Utica was eliminated from the Calder Cup playoffs Thursday with a loss to the Albany Devils.

Garteig went 32-4-7 with a .924 save percentage and a 1.91 goals-against average in 43 games this season with Quinnipac.

The 24-year-old finished his four-year college career with a 78-25-16 record, a .917 save percentage and a 1.98 goals-against average.

The Canucks have now signed two goalies out of the NCAA this off-season: Garteig and Thatcher Demko.

Demko, 20, was drafted by the Canucks 36th overall in 2014.
