Matthew Wuest, founder of the popular hockey website CapGeek, died Thursday following a two-and-a-half year battle with colon cancer.

Prior to founding CapGeek in 2009, Wuest worked as a sports reporter for Metro Halifax and The Daily News covering local sports teams including the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL.

CapGeek, which ceased operations on Jan. 3, 2015 as Wuest tended to his health issues, was a valuable resource for NHL team and player salary information that many sports websites, including Sportsnet.ca, often sourced.

“He was just a great guy who really loved what he did,” Metro Halifax managing editor Philip Croucher said Thursday. “I’ve never seen anyone do it better.”

The Stanley, N.B., native is survived by his wife, Melanie.
