Capitals’ Green expected to become free agent

Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox discuss the latest news around the hockey world, including a possible face-off between top prospects Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid in the World Championships.

The 2015 NHL unrestricted free agent crop is lacking in star power, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any highly coveted players on the open market.

According to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox, Mike Green is unlikely to re-sign with the Washington Capitals. Earlier this month Green said he wanted to stay with the Capitals until the day he died, but now it looks as though the veteran defenceman will be one of the most prized players available in free agency.

Green, 29, is in the final season of his three-year, $18.25 million contract.

Sportsnet’s Luke Fox ranked Green as the No. 3 most valuable pending unrestricted free agent.

The Calgary, Alta., native has seven goals, 33 assists with a plus-12 rating in 65 games with Washington this season.
