Should Carey Price be suspended for his blocker punch?

Watch as Carey Price gives Kyle Palmieri the business after being run on.

Carey Price stood up for himself on Thursday, but it might cost him with the department of player safety.

With 18 seconds left in the first period in a game against the New Jersey Devils, Price took exception to Devils forward Kyle Palmieri‘s net drive, and responded by punching Palmieri in the back several times with his blocker.

The NHL rule book states that a match penalty can be awarded: “If, in the judgment of the referee, a goalkeeper uses his blocking glove to punch an opponent in the head or face in an attempt to or to deliberately injure an opponent, a match penalty must be assessed.”

Sportsnet’s John Shannon thinks Price was lucky to not have been ejected.

Price was given two separate roughing minors for his actions (he also threw his fists at the end of the scrum), and if the league determines that he was trying to injure Palmieri, the Canadiens goaltender could be facing supplemental discipline.
