Midway through the third period of Friday’s game between the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers, Bruins coach Claude Julien was furious.
With the game tied 2-2, Brad Marchand was assessed a controversial two minutes for goalie interference after bumping into Henrik Lundqvist, who proceeded to fall to the ice…enthusiastically.
The Rangers ended up taking the lead on the ensuing power play, however Boston wound up scoring two goals in the final four minutes of the game to emerge with the 4-3 victory.
Since the Bruins won the game, the play is more or less water under the bridge, but neither Julien nor Marchand were shy about expressing their feelings about how Lundqvist reacted to the contact.
“I know he does some acting on the side, but he doesn’t need to do it on the ice,” Julien told reporters after the game.
Marchand also took a jab at how Lundqvist fell.
“I thought it was a bit of a weak call,” Marchand said post-game on the TV broadcast. “I mean he’s out of the crease and lightly gets touched and it looks like he got shot out there.”
Earlier in the game, Marchand made some light contact with Lundqvist on a Patrice Bergeron goal that stood.
