Coach’s Corner: No excuse for Byfuglien’s actions

Ron MacLean and Don Cherry discuss all the news around the NHL, including Dustin Byfuglien’s suspension, Scott Gomez throwing elbows and Kris Russell setting the record for most blocked shots in a season.

Don Cherry says Dustin Byfuglien definitely deserved the four-game suspension he received for a vicious cross-check to the back of unsuspecting New York Rangers forward J.T. Miller’s head.

“Kids, never do what Dustin did,” Cherry said on Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada Saturday. “You know he’s one of my favourites, but never do what he did. There’s no excuse for what he did. None.”

Cherry believes the Winnipeg Jets defenceman cross-checked Miller in response to Miller giving Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec a slash in front of the net.

Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault had this to say of the play: “[It was] violent, deliberate, could have broken his neck…it was one of the most vicious cross-checks I’ve seen this year.”
