Coach’s Corner: Domi looks like rookie of the year

Ron McLean and Don Cherry recap an exciting week in the NHL, taking a look at Martin Jones in San Jose and Max Domi in Arizona. He also reminds Canadian to vote.

Heading into the 2015-16 NHL season, Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel hogged the rookie spotlight, but so far no first-year player has performed better than a certain Arizona Coyotes forward.

Max Domi is right up there for rookie of the year,” Don Cherry said Saturday on Coach’s Corner in Hockey Night in Canada. “He helps Duclair get his hat trick. He’s playing like he did in junior. I mean, he’s got it. He’s rookie of the year so far.”

Through four games, Domi has three goals and three assists and has played a key role in the Coyotes’ impressive 3-1 start.

Cherry isn’t the only one putting stock in Domi. Former NHLer Teemu Selanne recently said Domi is his pick to win the Calder Trophy.

Selanne was teammates with Max’s dad Tie Domi for 2 ½ years when he broke into the NHL in the early 1990s, so he may be slightly biased.
