Cowen clears waivers, Maple Leafs will try to move before deadline

Jared Cowen may not be long for the Maple Leafs. After coming over in the Dion Phaneuf trade, the young defenceman may yet be moved again thanks to his very cap-friendly salary situation that makes him a good trade target.

The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be trying to find a new home for defenceman Jared Cowen.

Cowen cleared waivers Saturday morning and as Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston wrote Friday the Maple Leafs will try and move him before Monday’s trade deadline.

Cowen, 25, has yet to appear in an NHL game since he was acquired by Toronto in a deal with the Ottawa Senators earlier this month.

His contract carries a salary cap hit of $3.1 million, per generalfanager.com, and will become a restricted free agent after the 2016-17 season,

The ninth overall pick of the 2009 NHL Draft has appeared in 249 NHL games, recording 15 goals, and 31 assists with 174 penalty minutes.
