If you’re at all familiar with the Ottawa Senators or goalie Craig Anderson, you know he usually wears No. 41. But in the pre-game warmup prior to Saturday’s game against Buffalo, Anderson was wearing No. 23. Why?
Because it’s his wife Nicholle’s favourite number.
Nicholle was diagnosed with cancer in October, so on two different occasions Anderson took a leave of absence from the Senators to be with her. But on her insistence, he has returned to the lineup.
In Anderson’s first game after news of the diagnosis, he shut out the Edmonton Oilers 2-0. He then followed that up with a 2-1 OT win over Carolina. He also made some additions to the back of his helmet.
The Hockey Fights Cancer initiative is ongoing with a number of teams hosting their nights on Saturday, including the Senators in Ottawa.
