She wouldn’t wait until Dad drove to the hospital.

Darren Helm’s newborn daughter, Rylee, was born in her parents’ car at 2:15 a.m. Monday morning while the Detroit Red Wings centre and his girlfriend, Devon, raced to the hospital.

Even more impressive than Rylee’s quickness is that Mom self-delivered the couple’s second child in the back seat.

“It was all her [Devon], by herself,” Helm told Detroit reporters Tuesday following the team’s morning skate. “I was just in the car with her, and she was able to take of business herself.

“It is very remarkable, incredible. I was just trying to get to the hospital as quick as I could.”

The six-pound, 10-ounce bundle of surprise arrived about a week ahead of schedule, and both Rylee and Devon are healthy and happy.

“After [Sunday’s] game I was in bed around 10:30 or 11, pretty tired,” Helm told reporters, “and she kind of woke me up and said things were happening real fast. It came on so quick. We thought we’d have some time to get to the hospital.

“The baby was ready to come out and say hello, and that’s what she did.

“It was pretty intense.

“I’m extremely proud of what she did. The courage and the pain that she had to go through is amazing. How she did that – I’m so proud of her, proud of the baby.”
