DeBoer, Tippett named asst. coaches of NA World Cup team

George Stroumboulopoulos talks with Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock about being the coach for Canada’s World Cup of Hockey team and trying to stop Alex Ovechkin from making hockey history.

San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer and Arizona Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett have been named assistant coaches for the North American team at the 2016 World Cup.

The North American squad will be comprised of players under the age of 23 and is being co-managed by Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli and Stan Bowman of the Chicago Blackhawks. DeBoer and Tippett will assist head coach Todd McLellan, also of the Oilers.

DeBoer has his Sharks off to a 7-7 start to the 2015-16 season. Before reaching the NHL, DeBoer coached in the OHL for 14 seasons. Tippett is in his seventh year behind the Coyotes bench and spent six years as head coach of the Dallas Stars before that.
